FIFA President Gianni Infantino has officially tightened the disciplinary code for the upcoming FIFA World Cup. In a move to protect the integrity of the game, any team that decides to leave the pitch to protest refereeing decisions will face immediate disqualification and a permanent loss on their record.

Zero Tolerance for Abandoning the Match

The new mandate is designed to stop “protest walk-offs” that have disrupted various league matches globally over the past year. According to the FIFA executive, the chain of sanctions for abandoning a match will be swift and non-negotiable:

Immediate Red Cards: Officials are instructed to issue red cards to players and coaching staff participating in the walk-off.

Automatic Forfeiture: The match will be stopped immediately and the protesting team will be declared the loser.

Walkover Defeat: An official 3-0 loss (tapis vert) will be applied, which could prove fatal for a team’s chances in the World Cup group stages.

The Official Statement from Gianni Infantino

The President emphasized that while emotions run high, the authority of the officials must remain absolute during the 90 minutes of play.

Starting from the World Cup, any team that provokes or decides to leave the field to protest the refereeing will receive red cards and an automatic forfeit… and will then lose the match by walkover.” Gianni Infantin

Protecting the Image of Global Football

This regulatory crackdown aims to safeguard the interests of fans and broadcasting partners. With billions watching, FIFA intends to prevent chaotic scenes that tarnish the reputation of the World Cup.

Experts suggest this is also a preemptive strike against teams frustrated by VAR (Video Assistant Referee) decisions. By making the penalty an automatic forfeit, FIFA removes the leverage teams might use to pressure officials during a high-stakes match.
