As the United States approaches the Semiquincentennial (250th anniversary) of its founding, the U.S. State Department has unveiled a historic and surprising design for a limited-edition commemorative passport. Launching in July 2026, these travel documents will feature the likeness of the 45th and current President, Donald Trump, marking the first time a living president has been featured inside an American passport.
A Historic Design for America’s 250th Anniversary
The “America250” initiative aims to celebrate a quarter-millennium of U.S. history with high-profile events and symbols. This special passport model is a centerpiece of that effort, designed to blend contemporary leadership with the nation’s origins.
Key Features of the Commemorative Passport:
Official Portrait and Signature: A stern-looking portrait of Donald Trump appears on an interior visa page, surrounded by the text of the Declaration of Independence.
Gold Ink Finish: The President’s signature is prominently displayed in a bold gold-laminate ink.
Founding Fathers Tribute: To bridge 250 years of history, another page features a classic depiction of the Founding Fathers signing the Declaration of Independence.
External Design Changes: The cover features “United States of America” in gold text at the top and “Passport” at the bottom reversing the standard layout. The back cover showcases a 1777-style American flag with the number “250” encircled by 13 stars.
Availability and “Limited Edition” Status
The State Department has confirmed that these passports are an “edition limitée” (limited edition).
Where to Get One: They will initially be available primarily to applicants who apply in person at the Washington Passport Agency shortly before July 4, 2026.
Standard Options: Citizens applying online or at other regional agencies will continue to receive the standard U.S. passport design.
Fees: There is currently no reported additional fee for the special design if applying at the designated location.
Beyond the Passport: The 2026 Gold Commemorative Coin
The iconographic tribute to the 250th anniversary extends to the U.S. Mint. A 24-karat gold commemorative coin has been approved, featuring President Trump on the obverse (front) leaning over a desk with his fists pressed down, intended to project a “strong and tough” image. The reverse will feature Trump with a clenched fist in front of the American flag.
