A new grassroots movement is gaining momentum across Haiti as citizens demand the immediate restoration of civil aviation operations at Toussaint Louverture International Airport (PAP). The campaign, driven by economic urgency and national pride, carries a dual mandate: the resumption of commercial flights and a firm rejection of the site being used as a foreign military base.

The Demand for Immediate Aviation Restoration

For months, the suspension of regular flight schedules in Port-au-Prince has isolated the nation, severed ties with the Haitian diaspora, and crippled local commerce. The campaign’s primary slogan, “We demand the immediate reopening of the airport,” reflects a growing frustration among travelers, business owners, and humanitarian organizations.

The prolonged closure has resulted in:

Economic Stagnation: A sharp decline in import-export capabilities.

Humanitarian Concerns: Limited access for medical supplies and emergency travel.

Travel Disruptions: Thousands of Haitians remain stranded both domestically and abroad.

Opposition to U.S. Military Presence at Toussaint Louverture

Central to this new movement is a stance against the militarization of Haiti’s primary gateway. Proponents of the campaign have voiced strong opposition to any plans that would see the airport serve as a U.S. military base or a hub for foreign armed interventions.

The airport is a civilian asset and a symbol of our national sovereignty,” a campaign representative stated. “It must serve the people and the economy, not be converted into a strategic outpost for foreign forces.

This sentiment taps into a long-standing national discourse regarding Haitian self-determination and the role of international security missions within the country.
